Is My Child Too Sick To Go To School?

Cold vs. Flu
A cold is a common and usually mild viral infection of the nose and throat. It's caused by many different viruses, but most often by rhinoviruses. Symptoms typically include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, a sore throat, and a cough. A cold usually comes on gradually and lasts for about 7 to 10 days. While uncomfortable, it's generally not a serious illness and can be managed with rest and fluids.
The flu, or influenza, is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Unlike a cold, the flu can be more severe and lead to serious health problems like pneumonia. Symptoms often come on suddenly and are more intense than a cold. They can include a high fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, and a dry cough. While many people recover from the flu in a few weeks, it can be dangerous for young children, older adults, and those with certain health conditions.
Knowing when to keep your child home from school or daycare is important to help them recover and to prevent the spread of illness. Generally, you should keep your child home if they have a fever of 100.4°F or higher, are vomiting, have diarrhea, or complain of severe body aches. Also, if they are too tired to participate in normal activities, it's a good idea to let them rest at home. If you're unsure, it's always best to consult with your child's doctor.
